The whole world is talking about the homestead of Felicja Curyłowa from the picturesque village of Zalipie in Powiśle Dąbrowskie. Although the village is unique in its kind, it is not the only one in this region where the custom of painting houses and their interiors with original plant patterns has been cultivated and developed for several generations. This decoration was probably created at the end of the 18th century and was related to the disappearance of smoke cottages. Women painted spots called "paints" on sooty walls with lime to brighten and beautify the interiors of their homes.
The propagator of this unique folk art was the outstanding painter Felicja Curyło (1903-1974). The artist's house was frequently visited during her lifetime and over the years it has become the most important place for everyone interested in folk art.
The object has been preserved in the same form as during the painter's lifetime. In the hall, attention is drawn to the black ceiling with white patterns painted with clay. This is a technique referring to the oldest tradition of painting in Zalipie. The walls are decorated with paintings on paper and cutouts. The ceilings and walls in the rooms are richly decorated with paintings made directly on the plaster, as well as "carpets" and wall hangings painted on paper. The decoration of the rooms is complemented by products made of colorful tissue paper: spiders, wedding rods and colorful bouquets. Near Felicja Curyło's cottage, you can visit a richly decorated cottage with full equipment, which in the past belonged to the outstanding painter and poet Stefania Łączyńska. It is worth visiting because it gives a broader view of the region's folk art and is the only opportunity to enter the interior of the painted house. Next to these two "rich" houses in terms of decoration and furnishings, there is a cottage, quite different in character, called the poor man's cottage. The cottage is distinguished by a thatched roof and whitewashed walls. The only decorative element are beautiful plant paintings painted on the external walls of the building.
There are two more buildings in the mini open-air museum: a former cowshed and a barn.
