Just as trees have annual rings from which we can read their age, so houses give us a glimpse into their history if we give them a chance. Thanks to the great owners, the burgher house No. 34 on the square in Poděbrady can also do that.
The square, the fortifications and the first ponds were built by the lords of Kunštát. The estate flourished under the hands of King George and his descendants and was popular in the hearts of the following rulers. The occupation of Poděbrady by Swedish and Saxon troops during the Thirty Years' War hurt the city, but the total catastrophe did not come until 1681, when the whole town was reduced to ashes.
All the burgher houses were multi-storey buildings made of wood, built on stone foundations. A strong wind spread the fire at an unprecedented rate, and all 600 inhabitants suddenly lost their roofs. According to the regulation, all new houses had to be multi-storey and brick.
You can admire the admirable energy that the broken inhabitants of Poděbrady put into the reconstruction of the square in the following years with their own eyes at Pension Twenty. You will see a number of original historical building elements, such as the original marl masonry or burnt brick vault, in the entrance hall, on the stairs, in the café or in the apartments. Attic apartments reveal old beams in open ceilings.
Admire, touch, think… and then head to the center of this beautiful spa town and the colonnade, where recent history is being written.
Podebrady is a city where you can really relax. Take a walk, be pampered or explore the surrounding cycle paths. And our apartments are furnished so that you can boldly continue with a comfortable rest.
On the ground floor of Design Pension Twenty is a beautiful cafe, which is also a reception. Here we will help you with everything, advise you, and feed you. Upstairs there are 4 bright apartments overlooking the quiet garden or the square. The remaining 4 apartments are located in a beautiful attic space.
All apartments have an equipped kitchenette, a dining table (or coffee table) and a TV. Of course there is a private design bathroom with shower and toilet.
You can also sit in our garden. It is a quiet space in the courtyard, where children can run, while you can "switch off" at a book, a cup of our selected coffee or homemade lemonade.
Each apartment is equipped with a kitchenette. It is ideal for preparing snacks for trips and simple meals. But for a romantic dinner, let us recommend one of the excellent nearby restaurants. And come to the cafe for breakfast.
Coffee Podebrady is a cafe on the ground floor of our pension. It is a home-made company with selected coffee, which is roasted directly in Poděbrady. If you are a coffee lover who could talk about it for hours, then you are right here. Experienced baristas are ready to answer all your every question. You can kick in the new day with a really strong espresso, during the day you will be refreshed by homemade lemonades and excellent wine, or one of the original alcoholic coffee cocktails. You have to try it!
We also serve an à la carte breakfast in the café. Fluffy pancakes, fresh pastries, sourdough breads, baked sandwiches všechno all from quality, fresh and (as far as possible) local ingredients.
Podebrady is a spa town, so walks and drinking mineral waters belong to the local folklore.
The first mineral spring erupted in Poděbrady in 1624. It was a strongly ferrous water and a beautiful ferrous bath was created in the place of its spring over the centuries. One hundred years ago, one bath in this "miracle" water would cost you 30 pennies. Well, don't rejoice unnecessarily - the city has become significantly more expensive since then. Today, after the iron bath, only a stone well remains next to the Mining Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The iron spring has gone out of fashion and has been replaced by carbonated mineral water. The Prussian nobleman Karl Bülow from Bothkamp determined the location of the new spring with a twig in 1904. The ceremonial opening of the carbonic spa with the participation of the Bishop of Hradec Králové Doubrava and the music of the Kmoch Band from Kolín took place 4 years later and their fame continues to this day. Also, try loading into a carbonic bath at least once. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by the skin, increases its blood circulation and has a positive effect on the activity of the heart and kidneys. In addition, the city has plenty of wellness facilities and massages.
Lovers of architecture will have several centuries in the palm of their hand in Poděbrady. Whether it is a Neo-Renaissance Záložna designed by architect Karel Hugo Kepka, Baroque houses with a Classicist facade on the square or a Neo-Renaissance-Art Nouveau Obereigner villa designed by architect Josef Fanta.
If you like order and everything in its place, you will certainly appreciate the carefully maintained spa park. After all, you can also take refuge with a book on the bench here for a little peace and time for yourself. Because that's exactly Slow Travel. Take a look at the flower clock, which has been here since 1932. The Libenský colonnade in the constructivist style is 4 years younger. The columned hall, which is connected to the circular pavilion, comes from the drawing board of architect Vojtěch Kerhart. The colonnade is named after the founder of Czech cardiology, examination and treatment institutes in Poděbrady, Prof. Dr. Václav Libenský.
In summer, come and refresh yourself at Lake Podebrady. There is a sandy beach, lawn, pedal boats, parasols and deck chairs, several refreshments, but also a beach volleyball or soccer field. Whether you are traveling for two, with friends or with your family, here you can step out of the spa tranquility and get really lost.
Explore the Elbe Trail by bike and let yourself be taken to Nymburk, Lysá nad Labem, or see the remains of the Slavník fort in Libice nad Cidlinou. And if you don't have a bike, you can jump into in-line skates and ride the 9 km long route while standing.
What’s there for children?
Children love running in the castle park and tasting springs. You can also visit the nearby fields and the lake. The surrounding bike path is also suitable for children. And if your children have four wheels rather than two, there is a skate park not far from us.
You can end each trip with a reward in the form of a warm spa wafer. And let them find a statue of a dwarf as a fighter, who has been tirelessly waving time into a big toadstool with a hammer since 1938.
