There are many legends about the origin and meaning of the name "Fuerteventura". Some try to interpret it with modern Spanish: "fuerte" meaning "strong", "ventura" from "viento", meaning "wind", and since a strong wind often blows here, they believe to be right. But the name is much older than modern Spanish: as "Forte Ventura" or "Laforte Ventura" it appears on a sea map from 1339.
The Romans were looking for another connection to the climate, thanks to which spring reigns here practically all year round, and therefore called the Canary Islands "Islands of the Blessed" ("afortunatae insulae", "Islas Afortunadas"). This name was probably also used by the Catalan-Mallorcan sailors who visited Fuerteventura in the 14th century, referring to the "Great Bliss". Pliny the Elder called the island due to its most outstanding feature - the many goats -, "Capraria", i.e. "Goat Island", because "Capra" is Latin for "goat". This is also indicated by the name of the indigenous people, the "Guancha", for the island, "Erbania": the Guancha are descended from Berber tribes from North Africa, and in Berber language "Arban" means "male goat".
For us, both are right - because whoever tastes today the delicious cheese made from goat's milk on Fuerteventura and enjoys the climate, feels blissful :-)
Welcome to our country retreat in the north of Fuerteventura! We are environmentally friendly and we love the tranquility. We have photovoltaic solar panels, thanks to which most of our electricity consumption comes from the sun. All the water we use is used to irrigate the garden and we also use rainwater that we filter with a volcanic stone to drinking water. And thanks to the design of the house there is constant airflow, so no air condition is needed.
Our newly built complex in traditional Canarian architectural style is located in Villaverde near La Oliva, a quiet rural area, ideal for relaxing and away from the larger urban centers. At the same time, we are only 15 minutes from the dunes and beaches of Corralejo and its leisure centers. We are also fortunate here to have a privileged and unique view of the east coast of the neighboring island of Lanzarote. Besides, you can enjoy our beach style pool with waterfall and Jacuzzi.
A total of 4 suites are at your disposal: Ana, Alicia, Inés and Ricardo. Each one is 45 square meters and can accommodate up to 3 people. They all have bedrooms with two singel beds, a sofa bed, private bathrooms, a small living room and a small terrace. Amenities such as a smart TV and internet, refrigerator, microwave as well as electric kettle are also part of the equipment. The only difference is that Ricardo has also a kitchen and a mezzanine.
All suites, of course, have access to the pool, the garden with chickens and barbecue area, but also to the inner common room and the common kitchen with dining room. In fact, in the latter we have the capacity to also hold corporate team buildings in a unique, relaxing and ecological environment.
Eco Relax Suite Fuerteventura we have created, among other things, to share moments and experiences with people who are looking for personal development in this great location. We also create the right environment for this with our common kitchen, dining room and BBQ area outside. The fully equipped, modern kitchen offers space and all the necessary utensils to create great dishes. In the dining room right next to it, you can start a conversation while eating them and exchange about the world. And following a BBQ in the outdoor area, you can enjoy a drink while letting your view wander over the unique landscape. In the garden we also have a banana plant, so if you're lucky and they are ripe enough, you can enjoy fresh organical fruit from directly next ot the house.
As part of our Executive Pack, we also offer a whole breakfast made with organically grown ingredients, such as Spanish omelet with fresh eggs from our hens.
You can buy typical Canarian cheese - made from goat's milk, among other things - at the Quesería Cooperativa Guriamen, for example, the cooperative also produces it itself. Queso Majorero, which originates from the Canary Islands, is the first goat cheese in Spain with a protected designation of origin, and it even has its own museum here - so be sure to try it!
At the Verde Oliva minimarket you can find other delicious island delicacies, including some from small producers.
A small market, the "Mercado de las Tradiciones" with regional fruit, vegetables, cheese and art takes place on Tuesday and Friday forenoon in the center of La Oliva. And while you're there, it's also worth visiting the AULAGA Concept Store for Slow Life, run by the two expatriate Madrileneans Beatriz and Alejandro.
For eating out, we can recommend the following nearby eateries among the many excellent ones on the island: Restaurante El Horno, for example, offers steaks, Mediterranean cuisine, grilled dishes and tempting desserts. Restaurante Casa Marcos awaits you with creative cuisine, regularly changing menus and large portions. And the Bar Escanfraga serves real local food like crawfish, but also tapas, chickpea stew or fish croquettes.
We have consciously chosen a quiet location to create our eco-friendly, sustainable retreat. Therefore, you can recharge your batteries here, for example, by taking a dip in the pool and jacuzzi. The common areas also provide opportunities for interaction with others, so you surely won't get bored here. And when your batteries are recharged enough and you've interacted enough with others, you can head out to explore the island or engage in some sporting activities. If you like, we can give you local tips to get to know the island like a local and to do what local people do.
As you surely know, the Canary Islands are of volcanic origin. Consequently, you can find many traces of it on Fuerteventura, such as the typical barren landscape called "Malpaís" that starts almost right behind our house. To this also belong extinct volcanoes, like the Arena in the landscape protection area of the same name "Volcán de la Arena" about 5 km away from us. And who says that you can only discover the landscape on foot? Because here this is also possible on the back of a horse or camel(!) - just ask us! Besides that you can also rent bicycles or a car in Corralejo.
Nature has given us even more beauty than the Malpaís and extinct volcanoes, such as the starry sky - Fuerteventura with its low light pollution and dark night sky is a UNESCO protected dark sky area since 2015.
Another natural highlight is the dune park "Parque Natural de Corralejo", which is located near Corralejo and is a nature reserve. The large natural park offers extensive sand dunes and untouched beaches. Here you can swim in the turquoise waters of the Atlantic in a very relaxed way - or actively pursue water sports. The constant winds make the beaches interesting for water sports enthusiasts, in Corralejo or generally on the east coast especially windsurfing, but also kitesurfing. We can also organize possibilities for surfing, kayaking or stand-up paddling in other places for you. And speaking of sports: Trekking and mountain biking are also possible, some triathletes use the island to prepare for their competitions.
Apart from dunes, beaches and sports, Corralejo, just 15 minutes away from us, also offers the chance to dive into the gastronomic world and nightlife of the island. The latter is particularly glittering at the time of the carnival in February, respectively March.
What’s there for children?
In principle, Eco Relax Suite Fuerteventura is intended for adults. However, if you book all four suites, you are of course welcome to bring children.
Children can also explore the landscape and gaze at extinct volcanoes, climb the dunes of Corralejo or swim in the ocean at one of the beaches there. You can also take them on a short trip to the Wolf Patton Labyrinth near La Mexada at El Cotillo. The German-born musician who lives on the island began building the labyrinth in 1999, which is made entirely of stones and takes visitors also on an inner journey. Free of charge and open 24/7!
The Acua Water Park is located in the tourist center of Corralejo and is the only water park on Fuerteventura. With more than 25,000 square meters of space, it offers more than 14 attractions for all ages such as different giant slides, a wave pool and the "jump from the castle". There is also a wide gastronomic offer, animation and a children's club.
