Have you ever heard of Kekec, the fearless shephard? Here, in Kranjska Gora in the Northwest of Slovenia you can get to know him personally!
Kekec is a fictional child character created in 1918 by the author and poet Josip Vandot who himself was born here in Kranjska Gora. He is widely recognized as a Slovenian superhero and cultural icon, his character had an enormous impact in Slovenian popculture. Kekec is a brave boy and fearless shepherd from the highlands of his home region, Kranjska Gora in the Julian Alps. He is a good guy who is fighting an evil wild hunter and an evil herbalist woman from the mountains who is stealing children. The books about him were such a success that also three film adaptations of Vandots storys have been produced.
Today you can meet Kekec personally at the theme house "Kekčeva dežela" ("Kekec's Land") in Kranjska Gora or admire his statue near the waterfalls of the Pišnica river at the promenade leading to Lake Jasna where our Hotel Milka is to be found.
Milka is a unique boutique experience in the heart of the Julian Alps. This pristine Alpine backdrop is true to world’s boutique standards: every room is uniquely designed, with sumptuous comfort & unparalleled service in an Alpine setting, a small fine dining restaurant with lunch & dinner service, and a private sauna for two.
We offer 6 different rooms with different sizes and features, so everybody can find his/her favorite. Each one of them has a king size bed with extended leg space, air conditioning, a fridge, a minibar, a kettle, a shower, bathrobes, slippers – each pair is made from 6 recycled plastic bottles! -, bed linen, a wardrobe, a safety deposit box and a wonderful view on Lake Jasna as well as the surrounding mountains of the Julian Alps. Garden Suite has also a separate lounge, a private terrace with an outdoor hot tub and a mini garden. Rock Suite offers also a small private outdoor patio. Alpine Suite has a balcony with a broad viewing angle. Pine & Cone Luxury double duo is a play of opposites, a yin & a yang; both feature an open space bedroom that merges with the bathroom area and two ceiling windows that expand into two balconies overlooking the mountains and the lake. Lake Luxury Double offers a cinematic panorama that follows you at every step, instead of a TV we can offer an iPad to watch Netflix etc.
We provide for our guests concierge service, room service, luggage storage, daily housekeeping for free, while for example for laundry service an additional fee is charged.
Although smoking is not allowed in our hotel, there is a designated smoking area.
We are a very eco-friendly place:
- We are entirely a non-plastic destination – all our cosmetics comes in recyclable aluminium containers, all our linens in the rooms are 100% of natural fabrics.
- Our facade is not painted in colour, but the wood is burnt and then brushed to abide by local laws which require the upper part of the facade to be dark. Thus we never have to apply paint that washes off into the water stream.
- We use fair trade coffee with our own roast blend of coffee. We know the two coffee growers (one from Colombia and one from Brazil) and there is only one the delivery person between them and us.
- We work with local farmers to minimise the use of packaging, so the milk and cheeses delivered to us from local farms use glass bottles that are being used over and over. Also all our food is sourced in a radius of 200 km around the hotel and mostly from Slovenia. We provide things that are regional and/or that we produce ourselves.
- We have EV chargers at the hotel.
- In the next 2 years solar panels and storage batteries will be installed to further reduce our electricity consumption and to be able to store our own electricity that will be produced through our solar panels.
- The heating and cooling of the entire hotel is done mostly by our heat pump and some of the heat is recovered from the kitchen to heat the rooms and the restaurant area.
- Where ever possible we used Slovenian artisans to produce the products for us. All ceramics, cosmetics, most aluminium containers and clay for ceramics is of slovenian origin.
In our own boutique we offer bespoke custom-made items that have been made specifically for us, e.g. a line of ceramic products made from Slovenian clay by Slovenian artisans (coffee set, teapot and cups set, vases, lamps, scented candles etc.). We also sell our unique cosmetic products which are all natural and made specifically for us, as well as some other carefully chosen products we happily associate our hotel with: artisan chocolate, woolen blankets of finest quality, 100% cotton bathrobes that are in use in our hotel, our own roast of coffee blend, Slovenian lace items with UNESCO heritage certificate, organically made yoga mats, etc.
Note:
All the rooms in our hotel are designed for a double occupancy. We therefore cater primarily to adult guests, however we also welcome teens from ages 12 and onward. Please note that we cannot accommodate more than 2 guests per room except in Cone Luxury Double where an additional bed can be set up. Our beds cannot be separated into twin beds. Also be aware that you cannot bring your pet to all of our rooms, only to Rock Suite.
Hotel Milka is closed most of April and in November.
For an extra fee, we also offer an airport shuttle service, so you can travel to us wihtout car.
Restaurant Milka is one of a kind, merging Nordic & Alpine, modern & classic, in a way like a rebellious kid striving for perfection on its own terms. Our vision is founded on providing regional seasonal ingredients, inspired by the Alpine surroundings and traditions. Given the geographical location we are in, we seek to transcend the man-made borders by building on ingredients from our neighbouring countries of Austria and Italy, because we believe supporting local producers is one of the key factors in creating a future for responsible and unforgettable culinary experiences.

Our area is stunningly beautiful any time of the year and given that we look into the only national park in Slovenia (Triglav National Park), we are right at the forefront of outdoor alpine fun.
We are located directly by Lake Jasna. It is one of those picturesque lakes every Slovenian holds dear. Lake Jasna lies in the foothills of our most prominent alpine pass, drenched in history, while offering amazing vistas in whichever direction you happen to go. There is a myriad of options for activities around here: from hiking to biking, mountainbiking, paragliding, rafting, kayaking, Standup paddleboarding, canyoning, ZIP line etc.
Guests at the accommodation will be able to enjoy activities in and around Kranjska Gora, like skiing - we offer a storage room for your equipment for free - and cycling. Kranjska Gora is the oldest ski resort in Slovenia, and in winter it offers 20 km of ski slopes and 17 lifts. There are also many well groomed nordic skiing runs and both skiing and running are possible in the night time as well. Some of the ‘newer’ winter activities also involve snow shoeing, ice climbing and increasingly back country skiing.
Here in the Julian Alps there are many peaks over 2000 m above sea level and 3 high plateaus – Pokljuka, Mežakla and Jelovica –, so the area is extremely popular amongst the hikers. If you keep following the road up from Lake Jasna you will climb onto the Vršič Pass, which is with its 1,611 m the highest mountain road pass in Slovenia. It links the Sava and Soča valleys and is very popular with cyclists.
The Juliana Bike Trail with its 7 stages that all together give you 290 km in length and 8500 m in elevation gain of mountain bike trails are just a tease of what is there to explore. And wait until you will cycle with your road bike on the old railroad tracks that have turned into cycling routes: you can have 3 mountain passes in a day and see how we breed our professional cyclists like Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar into the shape they are in.
Kranjska Gora is also our closest social hub and crossroads to interior Slovenia, Austria and Italy, where you can continue exploring the alpine activities or gourmet explorations of the wider area. Arnoldstein (Austria) is just 6.5 km away, and Fusine Confine (Italy) only 8.5 km.
