Kiepura was said to have had a craving for Żegiestów, but since he couldn't afford it, he had to settle for Patria in Krynica. In the interwar period, life was bustling below our settlement. It was simply the right place to be! The health resort located on the hills above the Poprad River was one of the most famous and elegant at the time. In the sub-Alpine climate, in the area where the longest railway tunnel in Poland was built in the 19th century, you could admire the picturesque Beskid Sądecki, drink the spa waters and spend time in company between exquisite treatments. However, the golden era of Żegiestów ended with the advent of capitalism, and the modernist sanatorium buildings fell into disrepair for over two decades. The health resort was even called a ghost town. Until... the local lands were bought by the great-grandson of one of the builders from Sicily, who came here in the last century to build the aforementioned tunnel. And it was he who recommended us a charmingly situated plot of land with a view of the Radziejowa Range, where we created Osada Modrzevita.
You enter here in a yellow jeep, in which we or Jagna: our man will greet you. You can also enter in your own car, if you have a 4x4 drive. And it is worth entering, because here "where the crows turn back", there is a mountain refuge, where you love nature and peace - but you love in such really comfortable conditions. We have two cozy cottages made of moon wood for you, each with two private terraces and its own tub. There are those who say that they have never slept like they did in them. We have a vegetable garden based on the principles of permaculture, so that you can cook healthily and ecologically. We can also cook something together - joint culinary meetings in our outdoor, year-round kitchen are an opportunity for us to exchange good energy. Because although we are almost at the end of the world, we create a place that is alive: just like the old Żegiestów. We fill them with local handicrafts, we are constantly improving and we have new ideas. Sometimes we will even organize a small concert in the greenhouse, a gong festival on the terrace or small yoga workshops. Come to us and relax no worse than the cream of the crop of the interwar period.
Our village is located "where the crows turn," which means: at the end of the world. At least that's what three guests who recently visited us said. It's not quite the end of the world, as we're 800 meters from the village, across a stream, but as you can see in the photos – there's nothing around. Simply put: it will be wonderful here for those who love the mountains and peace and quiet.
We have three comfortable and cozy cottages, two of which are available for rent, and the third is where we spend our time when we're on site.
Our cottages have:
– 35 m²,
– a living room with a kitchenette,
– sleeping space for 2 people on the mezzanine,
– optional accommodation for 2 people on a fold-out sofa in the living room,
– a bathroom with a shower,
– 2 terraces: one in front and one in back,
– a private Finnish hot tub and gazebo each,
– access to the shared Ganbanyoku sauna (for an additional fee), outdoor kitchen, graduation tower, and winter garden.
Although you can sleep here as a family of four, you'll probably feel most comfortable with two people, with cozy accommodations on the mezzanine. Don't expect to work from here: the internet is barely there, and you don't come here to work.
Have you ever heard of moonwood? That's what the buildings in Modrzevit are made of. Specifically, larch, from which, as you might guess, we get our name. Moonwood is harvested during the waning phase of the moon. This gives it greater resistance to mold and pests, eliminating the need for chemicals to preserve it. It's also non-flammable and shock-resistant. Magic? No, science. Thanks to it, allergy sufferers and those particularly sensitive to outdoor conditions sleep like babies and breathe deeply. And the scent in the cottages is incredible.
A few words about the interiors and furnishings: we embrace the idea of sharing art and craftsmanship. Kasia created or finished many of the items in the cottages herself (e.g., bedding and towels). We focus on natural materials: linen, cotton, and wood. We also gladly support local artists, who have also crafted interior elements for us, such as lamps from old bardage boards. Outside, you'll find works by Mr. Wacław Janczura, a local sculptor, who created a figural beehive for us, a sculpture of St. Ambrose.
The location of the settlement is also deliberate and has its own magic. We are located near Żegiestów, one of the most elegant and popular pre-war spa towns. Żegiestów has a fascinating history.
When we're there, feel free to chat with us. We want this place to be vibrant; our ideas for its development are endless, and we'd be happy to organize some activity together. This could be a workshop, a shared jeep ride, or even a small concert in the greenhouse! We're open and people-friendly.
Well-equipped kitchenettes await you in the cottages, so you can cook your favorite meals and then enjoy them on the terrace with a view. To make things easier and more enjoyable, we've created a permaculture-based vegetable garden on the estate, which you can use as much as you like. Feel free to help yourself to carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, or green beans. You can also feast on apples from our organic garden, and in June and July, strawberries and raspberries.
We can also cook something together! We'd be happy to organize cooking workshops for you. We have an outdoor kitchen, the wonderful thing about which is that it can be used year-round. Even in November and December, we cook warming dishes under the shelter. Sławek specializes in cooking. We're even kidding, thinking we'll publish a book of recipes based solely on the vegetables and fruit from our vegetable garden. Our guests especially love our mangold soup, also known as chard. Who knew it was another name for chard?
If you want to come to us to get bored, the conditions are perfect. In the settlement, you can retreat to nature and forget about all the things that mattered before you arrived. Here, we offer the following activities to help you get bored (or not):
– Splashing in the hot tub on the terrace in front of the cottage – you can use it without restrictions, it's included in the price (you'll just have to operate the wood stove yourself); you'll also have privacy, as the hot tubs are located so they're not visible from neighboring cottages – we joke that you could jump in there naked at night without anyone noticing.
– Warming up in the Ganbanyoku sauna – haven't you heard of black silica stones straight from a Japanese volcano? - We'll be happy to tell you, and you can enjoy the pleasures of both body and soul (for an additional fee),
- use of the salt graduation tower,
- spending time on the terrace in the trees – in a hammock or sipping coffee at a table,
- massages (on request, for a fee) – let us know you're interested, and our massage therapist will come give you a massage – this can be done in the cottage with the graduation tower, then the pleasure and health benefits are doubled!
- picking strawberries in June, raspberries in July (you don't even have to go anywhere, because we've left a wild raspberry patch in the middle of the settlement), and mushrooms in the fall,
- cooking in the outdoor, year-round kitchen,
- stargazing through a telescope – there's one telescope in the settlement, but everyone is welcome to use it; The sky above us is untainted by artificial light and full of stars.
– Shinrin-yoku forest walks with Forest Power Cards, which are at your disposal. – “Forest Meditations” were developed by Joanna and Przemek, professional shinrin-yoku guides who popularize this practice, which reduces stress and improves health and well-being.
– Various creative workshops that we can organize for you. Kasia is an artistic soul and would be happy to lead, for example, art therapy.
– Yoga in the Widokownia hut, designed for workshops and spending time together: there is limited space, so this will be an intimate yoga retreat for a maximum of 4 people. It's also possible to schedule yoga workshops with children :)
– Admire (and maybe even purchase) the unique items that have decorated this place: the works of local artists, Kasia's handicrafts, and the wooden, inlaid skis that Aleksander Partyka, founder of the Forszta carpentry workshop, created especially for us (you can ski on his wooden skis!).
And while the time spent here is priceless, we suggest you also venture out to explore our surroundings, both near and far. There's never been anyone here who hasn't been captivated by our slice of the Sądecki Beskids.
– Firstly, we recommend discovering Żegiestów – both Zdrój and the neighboring village. It's worth visiting this revitalized spa town to drink the healing waters from the spa pump room, see the Spa House designed by Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz, which has just opened and offers a café, or enjoy the spa at the Wiktor Cechini sanatorium (located in a renovated modernist building from 1936). In the village, a little further from the spa, you can visit the Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel, built between 1917 and 1925, which now houses the Roman Catholic parish church.
– Speaking of churches: you should know that Żegiestów is a former Lemko village founded in the late 16th century. Before the war, it was the largest Lemko village in the region. After World War II, the Lemkos were expelled from here, but you can still explore the area along the trail of their cultural heritage. We recommend the Lemko Churches Trail – a loop around Krynica-Zdrój, Muszyna, and Żegiestów. Choose a car or bicycle, as it's quite a distance. Along the route, you'll encounter wooden and brick churches from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as Lemko cemeteries. – We're close to beautiful trails, which (really!) aren't crowded even in high season:
· Near the settlement, there's an unmarked access road to Trzy Kopce, and at the top is a massive meadow where, with good visibility, you can lie down and admire the Tatra Mountains from sunrise to sunset.
· To Magierówka (they call it that because Mr. Magiera lived there) – there's a clearing here, which also offers a beautiful view of the Tatras and, in the opposite direction, Palenica, which is 1.5 km away.
· From Żegiestów-Zdrój to Pusta Wielka (blue trail) and the Jaworzyna Krynicka range (blue and red trails).
– If you'd like to take a tour of the area with a professional Beskid Mountain guide, let us know. We'll organize it!
– For those who enjoy active adventures, we encourage you to take a rafting trip down the Poprad River – either by pontoon or kayak. The trip begins in Muszyna and ends in Żegiestów. If you prefer, we'll take you to the starting point and pick you up at the end. The Poprad is the warmest Polish mountain river and forms part of the Polish-Slovak border.
– In winter, we recommend skiing at Wierchomla. The station is located 15 km from our village and has several blue and red ski runs, each 4 km long.
We invite you with children, but those from 13 years of age, so really young people. We take into account the safety of the little ones - due to the terrain and the construction of the houses, you would have to constantly keep an eye on the youngest ones. Your older children, if they are curious about the world and like contact with nature, will definitely not be bored here. You can climb mountains, watch wild animals and explore the interesting history of Żegiestów located below. We can also organize workshops at your request: artistic (e.g. wreath-making, art therapy), silvotherapy, yoga with children or cooking together.
We have our own office with a charming view in the "WIDOKOWNIA" building, which we're happy to make available to those who want to combine relaxation with work. Here, you'll find a desk, good internet connection, beautiful decor, and a fantastic view and peace.
