If you long for free time in your hearts, let yourself be carried away to the Tuscan astray. Off the beaten track, you can do what you want and when you want. No "must" and "must" apply here. The windows of the stone house with Mediterranean-style interiors overlook the peace and green of the hills, and the air is filled with the uninterrupted hum of cicadas and the smell of wild rosemary. There is little in Poggio Murella and this lack of excess is enough to do things aimlessly, to take a breath to the bottom of the lungs and feel that idleness is a perfectly comfortable state.
Under the sun of Tuscany, you will indulge in dolce far niente in two apartments or the whole house for exclusive use, which can accommodate 6 people. Reach for a fig straight from the tree with incredible lightness, get new freckles from the sun, go for afternoon naps in a hammock. Over a cup of espresso and croissant crumbs with pistachio filling at the Centrale Bar, people watch, taste the local Sangiovese wine and try the regional cuisine at the trattoria il Vecchio Forno. Go to discover Etruscan towns, immerse yourself in the waters of the sea and the thermal baths of Saturnia, see places from the Bond movie, and run into a porcupine while hiking.
Life is made of little things, come and savor them.
We are waving to you from southern Tuscany, specifically the province of Grosetto, Maremma region. On the edge of a picturesque village - Poggio Murella, in a historic stone house, we have prepared for you two apartments with separate entrances. The house can also be rented exclusively and enjoy the 110-meter space in a group of 6 people. We arranged the interiors in the Tuscan style.
Apartment 1 is dedicated to 2 people. It consists of a bedroom on the first floor connected to a room with a sofa and a desk. On the lower level there is a living room with a kitchen, from where there is an exit to the porch. On the lowest level there is a bathroom with a bathtub (be careful of the steep stairs, you will see them in one of the photos).
Apartment 2 is also created for 2 people. It consists of a bedroom with a double bed and a bathroom with a bathtub on the first floor, as well as a kitchen and a living room on the ground floor. There is access to the garden from the living room.
From the porch of the house there is a view of the entire valley - fields, vineyards and steam rising from the nearby Saturnia baths (Cascate del Mulino).
Poggio Murella is a village, so it's worth thinking about renting a car, because it's the best way to explore the area. Free street parking is available on site.
The kitchens in both apartments have been arranged so that everyone can prepare something delicious in it. We equipped them with: oven, gas cooker, fridge, kettle, coffee maker, pots, cutlery, tableware, as well as spices, coffee and tea. There is a grocery store in Poggio Murella. Several times a week, itinerant sellers of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish stop by Bar Centrale. The nearest COOP supermarket is located in Manciano, 20 minutes by car from us.
In the area there are many vineyards that serve great wine, several pizzerias, traditional trattorias, but also cafes where you can eat delicious paninis or croissants. You will easily get fruits, vegetables, cheeses and other traditional Italian products locally. Fresh herbs grow in our garden - m. basil, rosemary and sage. And when it's time for figs, be sure to eat them.
About 200 meters from our house is the first restaurant in Poggio Murella. Trattoria il Vecchio Forno is a family owned, small artisan restaurant located in the main and only square of Poggio. You can sit outside and admire the colors of the sunset while eating tasty pasta and sipping wine. We recommend!
There is no other place like Bar Centrale, to which you will have a 5-minute walk (400 meters). It is not only the center of social life in Poggio Murella and the only bar in the city, but above all a place where you can eat the best croissants (be sure to try the ones with apricot jam), freshly baked every morning and drink coffee. In Italy, a bar is a place for a coffee shop, aperitivo and colazione - breakfast, morning press review and evening football matches. Daily short meetings with neighbors. You can also order local olive oil here.
The local food is simple but delicious. Regional specialties include Sangiovese wine, game (one of the dishes often served is ragù di cinghiale) and ravioli ricotta e spinaci, i.e. dumplings stuffed with spinach and cheese, topped with sage butter. Tuscany also offers products based on truffles, tartufo in Italian. Gluten lovers should know that Tuscan bread is salt-free and the pizza here is Roman-style - it's quite crispy. In the area you can try it in pizzerias: Lo Scangeo and Da Gigo e Licia.
We invite you to the Tuscan village of Poggio Murella to enjoy local food, good wine and, above all, Italian dolce far niente. We have hammocks in the garden for you and an amazing area that, although not a hit among tourists, has a lot to offer. The iconic hot springs in Saturn (a few minutes from us), hiking and biking trails, ancient towns, the sea - you will have it all at your fingertips.
Let's start with the view, because it's something to be proud of. Your eyes will look down from our hill over grain fields, vineyards, oak groves and cypress trees. The view is frontal, just like from the nearby Maremma viewpoint - the steam rising from Terme di Saturnia, the sun reflecting off the sea near Ortobello and sunsets.
The area in which we are located is mountainous and will surely appeal to all hikers and cyclists. For a walk you can take the Via Clodia, the ancient road that once led from Rome to Pisa. The Muro del Pirata also runs right next to the house - it is a 3 km 250 meters long bicycle route with a maximum gradient of 22% and at the same time the first road in the world with permanent signposts indicating the slope (its last section leads us to the top of the hill).
A few minutes by car separates us from the thermal baths - Terme di Saturnia (Cascate del Mulino), available all year round, at any time and free of charge. This is a place with exceptionally charming terraces of thermal waters, full of minerals, including sulphur. The water has a temperature of about 37 degrees Celsius and a blue color due to minerals.
Less than an hour's drive will separate you from seaside towns and beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean Sea. Head to Ortobello and the Monte Argentario peninsula and visit: Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano. You can also visit the little Talamone made famous by James Bond in Quantum of Solace.
You can also reach the volcanic lake Lago di Bolsena in an hour. There are several beaches in the area and water equipment rentals with motorboats, pedal boats, kayaks and sailboats.
The origins of Tuscany are related to the Etruscans - a people inhabiting northern Italy in antiquity. There are many charming Etruscan towns in the area: Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana, Semproniano, Montemerano, Città del Tufo, Montalcino, Scansano and also Vulci. The capital of the region, Grosseto, also has Etruscan roots, although it was later expanded by the Medici.
If all these benefits were not enough for you, you can also:
– go in search of truffles, for which Tuscany is famous,
– make a tour of numerous local vineyards,
– see castles and medieval fortresses, many of which are in the area,
– go to Arezzo, where the flea market takes place on the first weekend of the month,
– go on a trip to Val d’Orcia – a picturesque valley with, among others, famous Gladiator road,
– visit the towns of Pienza, Montalcino and Siena,
– go to Florence or Rome,
– go on a cruise to one of the islands: Isola del Giglio or Elba.
It is impossible to be bored in Tuscany. Unless that's what you need.
What’s there for employees?
Although we do not encourage you to do so, we let you know that the internet works flawlessly and you can work from here if you need it. In apartment 1 there is a desk, in apartment 2 there is a large table in the living room where you can sit with a laptop.
