Everyone knows Masuria and Kashubia, but have you heard of the Świętokrzyskie Lake District? If you want to surprise your friends with your choice of holiday destination—or simply live in Kielce or Częstochowa and Śniardwy is too far for you—come to Jedle. You'll see that micro-trips are just as fun. While northern Poland was cut by a glacier, the Świętokrzyskie Mountains were buffeted by strong winds. Sand was blown from the depressions, and when the climate warmed 10,000 years ago, lakes formed in the depressions. However, these lakes were always in the shadows, passed by Poles on their way to the more spectacular north. It wasn't until the turn of the century that scientists from Kielce shed light on these aeolian stars. They proved that nowhere else in Poland, in the uplands and mountains, can such a large number of lakes and dunes be found, and even non-glacial ones at that! Not only is it a paradise for naturalists, but we're also haunted by "Świeckos." This is how locals describe the phenomenon of will-o'-the-wisps dancing over the water, created by the combustion of methane gas escaping from shallow lakes. So if you don't want to look like a miner after shift, skip swimming in these dense, peaty lakes and instead go birdwatching, take a walk in the forest, and admire the Świętokrzyskie lakes from the piers. It will be wild and beautiful.
