In a small village called Facinas, in the province of Cadiz in Andalusia, we have created our refuge from the wind. Or more precisely, El Refugio del Viento. We decided to convert an old chicken coop into a living space, so alongside the thick stone walls came wooden-beamed ceilings, traditional Jerez tiles and a cosy living space for two. The rough stone walls are surrounded by a private garden with hammocks, and you'll also discover a Japanese Ofuro bathtub. Here, you can allow yourself the luxury of disconnecting from the world and reconnecting with what really matters — nature. We are actually close to the extraordinary Los Alcornocales Natural Park, where you can wander the trails, stroke a cork oak, peek in and cool off in one of the ancient caves while exploring the history, or watch thousands of migrating birds. If all this is your cup of tea, you'll love living here. And lest we forget, wild beaches are just a few minutes away...

The local area is connected to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, situated between Europe and Africa, only interrupted by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar.

1. Garden  
Your own private garden, ideal for sunbathing, outdoor dining, or relaxing. It is equipped with an outdoor shower, a Japanese Ofuro bath, and hammocks. You will also have access to a shared terrace.

2. Wild beaches
Just a few minutes away by car: Bolonia, Valdevaqueros, and Zahara de los Atunes.

3. Los Alcornocales Park (Los Alcornocales means "cork oak groves"). 
Here, you will find the most extensive cork forest in Spain and one of the largest in the world.
In addition to cork, you’ll also discover breathtaking caves…
Of the more than fifty caves discovered so far, three are of particular artistic value:
- Cueva del Tajo de las Figuras ("art sureño" - southern art), which has been compared by experts to the Sistine Chapel of cave art.
- The Cave of the High Laja, which contains paintings of the oldest known ships sailing the Mediterranean.
- The Bacinete Cave, where you can see over a hundred pictographic paintings from ancient times.

4. Something for birdwatchers and ornithologists - Laguna de la Janda 
Pack your backpacks and head to Laguna de la Janda, located near Cueva del Tajo de las Figuras.
A rare sanctuary for millions of birds, both native and migratory, its strategic location in the extreme south of Europe, very close to the African continent, makes it an essential transit and resting area for the hundreds of thousands of birds that migrate across the Strait of Gibraltar every year.
More than 2,500 cranes winter in the area each year, and it serves as a breeding ground for large eagles such as the golden eagle, griffon vultures, and Egyptian vultures. It is also a critical migration route for thousands of white and black storks, raptors, and birds of prey, as well as a breeding ground for thousands of herons, ducks, and other waterfowl.

Unfortunately, in the middle of the twentieth century, this important ecological site was destroyed. To support local rice cultivation, water was diverted from the lagoon and its associated freshwater wetlands, causing the area to almost completely dry up. Despite suffering from such indiscriminate human action, it continues to hold exceptional value for birds (it is a wetland of international importance) and remains one of the top destinations for ornithological tourism in southern Spain.
