Little Holland, the second Lourdes or the most Czech village, what can it be like? Spálov is a village in one word, "unique".
Its history is reminiscent of a small Gaelic homestead inhabited by Asterix and Obelix and bravely resisted Roman pressure. Unlike other Sudeten villages, the Czech natives remained in Spálov even after 1938, even though other places were crowded with the German population.
And speaking of truces with France, you'll find Lourdes here! The place of pilgrimage of the Virgin Mary in the rock is known for the legend of a Swedish soldier who hid here during the Thirty Years' War. He prayed that he would survive and return safely to his wife and children. The Virgin Mary listened to him and let a spring of drinking water gush out of the rock. According to the locals, it is medicinal. Due to the healing effects and appearance of the surroundings, the place is nicknamed Moravské Lourdy. (It should be noted that the Virgin Mary appeared here 100 years earlier than in Lourdes, France, so if anyone was copying, we were not.)
And what about Spal's Dutch? Historical sources prove that there were 7 windmills, which is relatively unusual in the Czech Republic in the 19th century. Only one survived, and by chance the smallest. Baler's mill was ground until 1938. Fortunately, the dilapidated building was saved by its owner, Mrs. Ludmila Jemelková, so you can see it from the inside as well - all you have to do is borrow the keys at the office in Spálov.

Twenty years ago, my wife and I took a big step into the unknown and bought an old stone farm in Spálov. We wanted to raise our children in the village. In order to ride a bike to school, play with friends on the street, experience childhood in the reality of the surrounding nature and not at the screen. This desire has been richly fulfilled for us. Over time, opportunities to make a living began to emerge. I didn't want to commute to work, so I feed myself - we gradually gained 35 hectares of meadows and pastures on which our 80 sheep graze, we harvest plums and apples from our orchard (all in organic quality), I go around shearing sheep and sell their forged products in the markets - from rings and earrings to candlesticks, hangers, sculptures combining stone with iron ...
So far, the last stone in the mosaic of my activities was the purchase, sensitive reconstruction and commissioning of Chalupa Pod Mateřídouškou. I try to convey to the guests who come to us the values that life in our village offers. We do not have high mountains, waterfalls or the level of a dam. But I offer peace and quiet for families or small groups of friends. Slowing down the time, realizing every step in the surrounding "pocket" landscape, undiscovered by tourists. I look forward to you.
