The caterpillars in Zakopane are like ants. So in order to distinguish one Peter from the other, nicknames began to be given. About 150 of them were created by the Gąsienica family. There are Jonki, because my father was called Jan, and there are Ciaptaks, because they were quite good. We were Gładczany - from Glade Gładka located on the slope of Gubałówka, which we have been inhabiting for over 400 years. We were, because everything changed when great-great-great-grandmother Regina Gąsienica-Giewont brought a flock (herd) of 100 sheep from Hungary. The roles of the highlanders are clearly delineated by tradition, so the woman juhas was something unheard of. The news of a strong and enterprising woman spread around Podhale. And since a Hungarian sheep is a Birka, it has been said from mouth to mouth that Regina is Byrka and her husband is Byrcyn. This is how we became the Gąsienicami-Byrcynami and we proudly bear this name, still cultivating pastoral traditions.
We still live at the top of Gubałówka and this is where we invite you. We built 3 houses on a large clearing with access to the most beautiful panorama of the Tatra Mountains. Of course, respecting tradition, with highlander art and crafts made by members of our family. Around there is a flower meadow or snow up to the armpits, in the neighborhood there are cottages from 1832 and 1863, and our sheep graze in the back. Come see Zakopane through our glasses. With a filter of tradition, stories and love for this region.

My name is Klementyna Gąsienica-Byrcyn. I come from the Gąsienica family, the largest family
highlander, whose roots come from the slopes of Gubałówka. Literally from here, because in the 17th century, the first ancestor settled here on a hill overgrown with forest. He cleared a little forest and built a hut out of wood, and in the fields he grew potatoes, oats and barley. The clearing that people had dug called Kopane, and then they started to say that the settler was sitting "Za Kopane". Hence the name of the later city of Zakopane. Our family name comes from the fact that the first inhabitant wore striped clothes and the local people called him the Caterpillar. Of course, over time, the family grew and inhabited other areas of the Zakopane valley, however, I am the heir of the family branch that grew for centuries on the slope of Gubałówka. My ancestors were Tatra guides, shepherds and storytellers. Father Wojciech Gąsienica-Byrcyn was the director of the Tatra National Park. Great-grandfather Stanisław Gąsienica-Byrcyn one of the founders of TOPR. Grandma Klementyna was a creator of highlander fashion. Mom is an artist and activist from Podhale. As you have probably noticed, we are deeply rooted in the Podhale region. We attach great importance to tradition, culture and family. For over 400 years, we have lived invariably on Gładkie, on the slope of Gubałówka, and we make sure that it stays that way. Privately, I am a master of spatial planning, a graduate of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. To this day, I deal with the history of ownership in the Tatra Mountains. I collect and describe historical documents, photos and facts about the ownership of highlander families in the Tatra Mountains before the expropriation by the communist authorities. My husband Andrzej, from the Hyców-Myrmułów family of Harenda, runs one of the
of the largest ski schools in Poland - HSKI. We have two wonderful children. We are waiting for you in Osada Gąsienicy, where you will feel the real Tatra Mountains and our Zakopane.
