Sometimes coincidences happen to people, and sometimes people accidentally end up in places that may be meant for them. We stopped by for coffee in Reszel and left with plans to renovate a ruined historic building built on medieval foundations. We knew that it would require conservation arrangements related to the Gothic brickwork and careful renovation of the windows, but we were not discouraged. We were enchanted by the atmosphere of a tiny town with compact and coherent buildings, permeated with the spirit of history and filled with art. For many years, Franciszek Starowieyski and Bolesław Marschall worked here, today Adam Myjak and Ita Haręza have their own galleries. Life here is unhurried and peaceful, so it is no wonder that Reszel was the first town in Poland to join the cittàslow network, promoting sustainable tourism.
We have created an atmospheric refuge here, replacing a summer house. We escape to it when we get tired of the noise of the big city. We come back to life here, because the thick walls effectively block the range. We read books, take baths in the bathtub, eat long breakfasts and absorb the historical atmosphere combined with the Japanese love of imperfection. From the bedroom windows we look at the Gothic church, walk in the park on the Sajna River and go to the gallery to commune with art. If you also want to escape, come to Reszel.
In a medieval town in Warmia, in the Mrągowo Lake District, we have a charming apartment for you, located in a historic tenement house. We decorated them in the wabi-sabi style, appreciating the beauty of Gothic bricks and windows, filling them with carefully selected furniture and accessories.
The apartment with an area of 64 m² includes: a comfortable living room, a cozy bedroom with a view of the Gothic church, a bathroom with a bathtub and a kitchen.
In the bedroom you will find a double bed measuring 140x200 cm and a single bed 90x190 cm. The sofa in the living room folds out to dimensions 160x200 cm.
Reszel belongs to the cittàslow network, a movement of leisurely cities that promotes the concept of a good and peaceful life.
Reszel is a real mine of monuments. Walking through the charming streets, you will immerse yourself in the history of this city. Castle of the Bishops of Warmia, Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul, the Gothic bridge, the city park on the Sajna River - all these places are approximately 200 meters from the apartment. You can look at the church while lying in bed and drinking your morning coffee. If you visit it, you will be able to climb the historic observation tower, 51.2 meters high, and see the clock mechanism from 1913. The town hosts numerous festivals and very solemn annual harvest festivals. In the center of the town there is Adam Myjak's gallery, and right next to the apartment, Ita Haręza's gallery.
There are two nature reserves in the immediate vicinity. The Sątopy-Samulewo Polder Nature Reserve protects the floodplains at the forks of the Sajna and Ryn rivers, which are breeding grounds for numerous species of wetland birds and a place where birds come during autumn and spring migrations. The Beech Nature Reserve is the guardian of a 150-year-old beech stand.
A few kilometers from Raszl, in the village of Zyndaki, the kayaking trail on the Krutynia River begins. In the neighboring village of Warpuny there is the We Młynie restaurant and the Frontiera ecological ranch producing mainly sheep cheese.
The two nearest lakes are within bike riding distance, so we encourage you to take your bikes here. At Lake Legińskie you will find a pleasant descent and a piece of grass, which is perfect for spreading out a picnic blanket. There is a public beach and plenty of wild swimming areas. On the other side of the lake, in Łężany, you can see the palace and park, and on your way back, visit Lake Widryńskie.
In the area you will find and see:
– Nazi bunkers in Mamerki and Wolf's Lair,
– Nakomiady Palace and Manufaktura, where old crafts and the Villandrian garden are recreated,
– Święta Lipka – a famous pilgrimage point, also known for organ concerts,
– Palace and farm in Galiny with a stud farm, hotel and restaurant,
– Biskupiec with a market square with seven streets spreading out towards the 4 sides of the world, at right angles, bourgeois tenement houses and the former town hall. At Freedom Square you can see the largest collection of cameras in Poland.
